Every student at East Farms helped create the photomosaic, but we needed one student’s art piece to use as the main image. I am blessed with creative talented students so I opened up the art contest to 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. All the students worked very hard on craftsmanship and it would have been impossible for me to choose just one image, so Annette Long from Avista picked the piece of art that would be used as the main image. The piece she selected was created by East Farms student, Darien Bry- ant, 6th grade. Annette said his image marvelously represented the Steam Plant because of the power lines he incorporated into the art; transferring energy is what the historic Steam Plant did for many years. On April 21, 2017 the “Unveiling Party” was held at the Steam Plant. It was a proud night for our staff, Avista, and the Steam Plant, but mostly it was a proud night for our students. East Farms STEAM Magnet School became the very first elementary school to have a public art piece hung in Spokane. It will continue to hang for many years to come and for those art students too young yet to understand the enormity of the project, it will still be hanging as they grow to understand their accomplishments. The photomosaic is titled “A Community of Hope” because in the end it took the good people of our community to make this art project happen and we all hope, someday soon, a breast cancer cure will be found. Spo- kane is a community of generous people committed to the success of all. Without the support of so many individuals we could not have accom- plished Spokane’s first Elementary School Public Art piece. July | August 2017 23
