Growing to Meet the Need
Dear Friend,
Schools across our community
are wrapping up the year,
which is exciting news for most
girls and boys. They’re looking
forward to lazy days in the sun,
trips to the park and swimming
with friends.
But for the one in every four
children in our region who
doesn’t always have enough to
eat, that last school bell means
the end of dependable meals
from the school cafeteria. Free
and reduced-price school meal
programs are a lifeline for the
many families who are struggling
to make ends meet. But during
the summer months, children in
need are at an increased risk of
hunger.
This is a big problem in North
Texas. It’s alarming to hear that in
a recent memorandum from the
Dallas City Council on reducing
the epidemic of poverty, Dallas
has the worst child poverty rate
of the 10 largest cities in the
United States.
This is an unacceptable reality,
and we must do everything we
can to ensure our local children
have enough healthy foods to eat.

Texas Food Bank is actively
expanding our network to reach
more of our neighbors who are
facing hunger. On the following
page of this summer issue of
Around the Table you’ll meet a
family who’s benefiting from one
of the new PantryPlus Partner
Agencies. These are large, client-
choice pantries that operate like
a traditional grocery store and
provide well-rounded services,
like medical aid, financial
education and other vital
resources.
