The “Love Yourself” series explored the stages of a relationship from the blissful
naivety of new love with Love Yourself 承 ‘Her’ to the bitter crumpled ending in Love
Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’ to letting go and pushing forward with the albums Face Yourself
and Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer’. Often disguised with catchy and upbeat instrumen-
tation, BTS’ love songs present listeners with a darker, more subdued view of love.
From being trapped in a maze to suffocating under a frozen lake or hiding behind a
mask, the metaphors they use are not ones that evoke happy imagery.
“Let Go” , off of the Japanese release Face
Yourself, is about separating from someone you
love but things are no longer working with. The
narrator knows he and his partner are not suited
for one another, and that it is best to go their
separate ways. The melody may seem uplifting
and light, but the lyrics are not.
“To the person I loved too much
To the red thread that got too entangled in itself
I couldn’t reach you, so I’ll walk a separate path
For that reason I’ll say goodbye.”
Despite once having a warm relationship, love
did not overcome their problems, and because of
that, it is time for the narrator to move on.
