General Aviation Itinerant Operations
Table 2N outlines the history of itinerant general aviation operations in relation to the total general
aviation itinerant operations at towered airports in the United States. The Arlington Municipal Airport
market share, as a percentage of general aviation itinerant operations at towered airports across the
country, has averaged 0.33 percent from 2007 through 2013. The airport experienced strong market
shares of over 0.40 percent in 2007 and 2008, before noticing a decline beginning in 2009, coinciding
with the nation’s economic recession. Since 2009, the airport’s market share has averaged approxi‐
mately 0.29 percent.
The table also indicates an overall declining trend in itinerant operations per based aircraft since 2007.
This ratio has fluctuated from a high of 288 in 2008 to a low of 138 in 2013. Between 2007 and 2013,
the average has been 198 operations per based aircraft.
Table 2N presents a pair of projections based upon maintaining a constant market share of the U.S.
towered traffic and the constant ratio of operations per based aircraft. It should be noted that pro‐
jected itinerant operations for 2014 are based upon actual ATCT records for the 12‐month period from
July 2013 through June 2014. The constant market share projection would result in a decrease in op‐
erations per based aircraft, decreasing from 142 in 2019 to 134 in 2024. Although the operations per
based aircraft ratio has fluctuated at Arlington Municipal Airport over the past several years, it has
maintained an average of approximately 200 since 2007. This forecast yields an annual itinerant oper‐
ations projection of approximately 40,100 by 2024.
A constant operations per based aircraft forecast was also determined that yields a slightly increasing
market share through the long term planning period, resulting in 45,300 annual itinerant operations
through the planning period of this study.
