GORDON’S FEED TACK & VET SUPPLIES October Preparedness Goals By Laura Owsley F all is just about my favorite time of year! Although it’s still hot, you can feel a change in the air. There’s so much to look forward to: Football games, lots of outdoor activities, yummy food and holidays with family. And, if your like me, you’ll start feeling some stress with the holidays coming! Being prepared can help with some of that stress so let’s get started on our supplies for October. This month my food storage focus is on oils and fats. Our bodies need fats to absorb certain nutrients which help our bodies function. The tin man in The Wizard of Oz finally got the oil he needed and he said, “Oil can! My goodness! I can talk again. Oil my arms, please. Oil my elbows.” The holiday season means sales will be on for cooking oils, shortening, chocolate chips and baking chocolate. I keep most of my chocolate chips in the freezer and pull them out as needed for longer term storage, they don’t have to be frozen, I just like to store them there. (I also buy a few cans of roast beef, and some beef or turkey jerky for my 3 month supply). It’s important to store oils properly. Heat ruins them so they have to be kept in a cooler place (not the freezer). Also, a dark location is best. Always smell it first as it can go rancid fairly fast. Store your olive oil in the refrigerator. Peanut butter or almond butter is another item to stock upon, but remember it has a short term shelf term life of about 1 year. Remember to always keep your water supply replenished. About 1 gallon per person for 14 days or at least 14 gallons per person. This can be used for cooking too.
