Are MOOCs impacting on-campus students? Jul. 2014 | Page 26
COURSE DESIGN
There were a series of lectures that the course team knew would be low in
attendance and so these were recorded for the students. The course team were
aware that the type and amount of reading for the course might be quite challenging
for the MOOC students and so they created lectures about the course readings and
also added these to the MOOC.
SUCCESSES
The on campus students benefitted from having additional online lectures which was
something that they had never had before. Himpele reported that the lecturers
claimed that as a direct result of the recorded lectures there was a significant
improvement in the quality of the writings for the on campus students. The
difference in performance was so great that they were left in no doubt that the
videoed lectures were the cause.

Lectures were available online for the MOOC students and for the on campus cohort
each session throughout the course there were different kinds of activities for each
of the 80 minute sessions. This was a highly interactive course which used the
lectures as a base for discussion in the class.
COURSE DESIGN
Question and Answer sessions. The students watched the videos and then
questions that arose from the videos were the focus of discussion in the session.
