BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING 56 Coll Honors 2100 - Design and Manufacturing in the Medical Device Industry Biomed [STEP, CRHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: Coll Honors 1100 - Introduction to the Biomedical Devices and Industry Biomed or concurrent enrollment in Coll Honors 1100 - Introduction to the Biomedical Devices and Industry Biomed Intended Audience: Grade 11 students [class rank in the upper one-third of their class] and grade 12 students [class rank in the upper one-half of their class] Credit: One trimester = 0.5 high school credit successful completion will earn 3 college credits] Major Outcomes: • Students will understand the unique requirements and challenges of medical device manufacturing with emphasis on Minnesota companies. • An introduction to the development cycle of a medical device, world class manufacturing practices, materials selection, manufacturing strategy development, sterility and clean rooms, instrumentation laboratories, design testing and validation, and packaging and distribution. Projects, Activities, etc.: Research, presentations and a visit to a medical device company. Instructional Focus: Small and large group discussions, presentations, lab activities and use of a college text. AC Electronic Health Records Biomed [CRHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: PLTW Honors Principles of the Biomedical Sciences Biomed Intended Audience: Grades 10, 11, and 12 Credit: One trimester/one period = 0.5 credit Major Outcomes: • Expose future health professionals to the world of electronic medical records including Practice Management, Electronic Health Records, and Health Information Management Projects, Activities, etc.: Hands on Medical Software experience and communication, Digital Research Tools, Technology Operations and Concepts, Career and Education Research Instructional Focus: This course allows students to use the latest technology and hands on learning techniques to better connect students to the information and customized resources they need to master electronic healthcare data. Coll Introduction to Holistic Healing Biomed [CRHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: PLTW Honors Principles of the Biomedical Sciences Biomed Intended Audience: Grades 10, 11, and 12 Credit: One trimester = 0.5 credit Major Outcomes: • Following Anoka-Ramsey Community College’s curriculum, future health professionals will be exposed to the world of Holistic Health with topics such as Chiropractic Care, Acupuncture, Dietary Supplements, and Mind-Body Therapies. Students will research and discuss various therapies in regards to their history, implementation, interaction with traditional medicine, and careers involved. Projects, Activities, etc.: Various Holistic Medicine Speakers, Research, and Projects Instructional Focus: This course introduces students to non-traditional medical therapies and aligning careers in the biomedical pathway. Medical Spanish Biomed [CRHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: PLTW Honors Human Body Systems Biomed and Spanish II Intended Audience: Grades 10, 11, and 12 Credit: One trimester = 0.5 credit Major Outcomes: This course is designed for Healthcare Professionals to assist them in communicating with those who speak a language other than English in the healthcare setting. Students will learn the vocabulary of Spanish medical terms, learn skills in medical reporting and medical communications, and apply cultural variations to medical practices.
