Projects, Activities, etc.: Real world applications with project based activities Instructional Focus: Independent design project with a mentor or advisor from a university, medical facility, or research institution. BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES ELECTIVES Coll Math in Medical Careers Prerequisite/Selection Process: Meet Accuplacer score of 81 or higher and Intermediate Algebra with College Foundations. Intended Audience: Grades 11 and 12 Credit: 0.5 credit - Elective Major Outcomes: The student will learn the different systems of measurement [metric, apothecary, and household] and the different equivalents of measure used to convert between the systems using labs to practice the skills. The ratio-proportion and dimensional analysis methods will be used to set up and solve basic dosage calculations, dosage calculations involving conversions, and calculations to reconstitute medications Projects, Activities, etc.: Varies by teacher Instructional Focus: This course is designed for students interested in health science careers. BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING Honors English 10 Biomed [CRHS only] Prerequisite/Selection Process: Acceptance into Biomedical Program at CRHS Intended Audience: Grade 10 Credit: Two trimesters = 1.0 credit Major Outcomes: • Rhetorical analysis • Interpretation and evaluation of literature and informational texts • Understanding of fiction and nonfiction • Public Speaking • Technical Writing Instructional Focus: Connection between rhetoric and Medicine including medical texts options and technical writing. Coll Honors 1100 - Introduction to the Biomedical Devices and Industry Biomed [STEP, CRHS only] Intended Audience: Grade 11 students [class rank in the upper one-third of their class] and grade 12 students [class rank in the upper one-half of their class] Credit: One trimester = 0.5 high school credit [successful completion can earn 2 college credits] Major Outcomes: • Student will understand the biomedical device industry in terms of its size and scope, current trends and products with emphasis on biomedical companies in Minnesota. • Students will receive an overview of the creation of a medical device from initial conception through development testing, validation, manufacturing, clinical trials and final approval by regulatory agencies. Projects, Activities, etc.: Research, presentations and one or more site visits to biomedical companies. Instructional Focus: Small and large group discussion plus presentations by industry representative. A college level text will be used. 55
