When it comes to architectural photography , how do you work and what do you feel makes for a great image ? I ’ m fanatical about lighting and pedantic about the equipment I use on my shoots , which enable me to capture for example , the way light reflects on an angle or surface effortlessly . An eye for detail , composition and an innovative approach also contributes hugely to the overall quality , however ultimately it ’ s about capturing a ‘ living ’ building in its surroundings . How architecture enhances the landscape and understanding the function it is fulfilling . Bringing to life hours of thought , design , material selection and construction to create something that changes human lives for the better in an instant .
I believe in clear and open lines of communication between photographer and client , so an understanding of material and functionality always contributes greatly to an image that is visually compelling and innovative .
What is your favourite building to have shot and why ? The DeBeers headquarters in Turffontein / Ormonde is still , to this day my favourite . Its an A-grade green building that uses water and mechanisms calibrated with a sun shading system
for precision climate regulation . The brick building designed to reflect the global company with its roots firmly planted in South Africa was built using a single batch of sand coloured bricks that perfectly complemented the design . It ’ s free flowing and modern amongst a more traditional historic setting . No detail was left to chance . The view from the main boardroom over the boundary wall was particularly impressive . Surrounding buildings were funded and encouraged to restore older buildings to almost mimic the magic of old town Kimberly !
What should architects consider when working with a photographer to ensure the best quality shoot ? To create still images of anything , questions need to be asked and answered visually ; a site recce does just that . Informal conversations about the building process , innovative materials used and why the building exists , give a professional context that will translate into compelling images . Using an innovative photographer with a solid technical background - a master of his / her craft so to speak , makes this process fun and exciting .
