Ignus Gerber
Personal background I completed my photographic studies at Pretoria Technical College in 1995 . After Tech I joined Beith Digital – one of South Africa ’ s largest repro and printing companies - as a youngster I literally threw myself into the deep-end of commercial photography as their in-house photographer . With the experience gained at Beith and later on at Holland America and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines as senior photographer , I ventured out on my own to work on campaigns for some of South Africa ’ s top advertising agencies . During this time I guess I got lucky and won numerous Fuji Film Photographic Awards as well as a Loerie Award for campaigns I did for DDB SA .
How did you get into photography I remember trading my gameboy for a friend ’ s camera at school when I was about 8 or 9 years old , and the rest as they say is history . The only other career I considered was becoming
an Architect . My two career choices later blended perfectly to combine my love for buildings ( which wasn ’ t that prolific in my hometown amongst the mielie fields ) and capturing the moment .
I have always been drawn to the ‘ finer things ’ and I ’ m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I ’ ve had as a photographer .
Do you specialise in any particular type of photography ? What started as a small photographic assignment to shoot swimming pools led to my appointment as preferred photographer for Lafarge-Holcim . Many incredible feats of architecture and engineering , industrial plants , great people and 25 countries later I still have the same passion and drive to get that perfect iconic shot that show buildings come to life .
I ’ ve also been privileged enough to work with great people such as the late Lucky Dube , Dorothy Masuka and many political and corporate leaders . In short I enjoy shooting buildings , industrial plants , working with people and advertising assignments . Quite diverse , however it keeps me on my toes ! Over the years I have added team members and diversified my business to include high quality video production and almost all types of content creation .
