Foyer Atterbury ’ s philosophy regarding the foyers of their buildings is that the space should feel like a living room , with comfortable , aesthetically pleasing furniture and striking art pieces . The generous double volume foyer uses Birchwood ply slats as a design element to screen off the toilets and service ducts . The extension of the slats right up to the ceiling highlights the volume of the space and adds texture . The large artwork on the wall to the right as you enter creates a focal point and adds colour to the space . A staircase enclosed with a black steel and perforated panel design leads up to the first floor . A glass wall provides light as well as acting as sound insulation for the first floor offices .
Landscaping Extensive indigenous and water-wise landscaping was specified ( requested ) by the Stellenbosch Municipality in order to retain the green feel of the existing site . The landscape is a prominent feature in structuring the western façade / main public edge . A landscaped berm further provides a visual and sound buffer for road and building users . This berm is lifted to simulate perspective of a two storey building ‘ set in the landscape ’, with an undulating topography to allow views to the garden terrace , ‘ new ’ pond and courtyard ( between existing Trumali House and new buildings ). The landscaping is irrigated by water from retention ponds .
