Conclusion Since the start of construction in 2021 , Kwena Square has uplifted the local community with creation of new jobs , improvement of shopping and restaurant experience , as well as energy efficient solutions . More than 600 job positions were awarded to the workforce in the local area during construction , with hundreds of permanent employment positions to date , and this is just the beginning .
Sustainability During the design process it was agreed that the design would be based on green and sustainable principles . Solar panels across the roof generate enough electricity to sustain the centre off-grid . This reduces the carbon footprint and promotes sustainability . Being an open-air mall , the need for artificial lighting is limited and energy consumption is very low . Energy efficient LED lighting was used in conjunction with the flow of natural light through the skylight at the Checkers lobby .
Separate water and electricity meters were introduced for each tenant to closely monitor the general consumption as well as water harvesting and storage . In the public toilets , sensor taps and urinals were installed to reduce water wastage , and hand driers were introduced in lieu of paper towel dispensers .
