When the architects first viewed the Westport Square site , it was vacant dune landfill within a context of predominantly open residential plots in a brand new neighbourhood . The client ’ s brief was to optimise the retail opportunity within an extremely tight budget ; maintain a healthy parking ratio ; be sensitive to the future surrounding domestic urban fabric and create an informal neighbourhood square or meeting place .
Site The natural site is almost level , with a slight fall across the 200m length . At the lower end expands to form a short leg , bounded on three sides by roadways . It was thus the logical end to place the 2,000m 2 anchor tenant where the site is broadest and the level difference is used to achieve goods receiving platform and a delivery area away from the public forecourt .
Design and Development With very little existing adjacent urban context to draw from the design has , instead , taken cues from the environment and newly landscaped suburb , thereby setting the pattern in the landscape for future urban development . Retail is accommodated in carefully scaled simple portal-framed sheds . However , the structural elements
The steel structure , which forms the edge of undercover walkways , also provides a framework for the dramatic display of retractable awnings , accent lighting and banners
