Liberty Promenade was purchased by Liberty Properties in 2004 . The existing development consisted of a number of separate buildings on a 22.9ha site bounded by AZ Berman Drive to the east and Morgenster Road to the North , with the rail line forming the Western Boundary .

ARCHITECT ’ S COMMENT Brief The existing shopping centre had a GLA of 44,000m 2 on a single level with open surface parking . The peripheral buildings consisted of medical suites , a training centre , a few stand-alone fast food drive through outlets , and additional retail stores , with a combined additional 6,000m 2 GLA to the original precinct .
The clients brief was to add 25,000m 2 to the existing centre , with the aim of making it the largest shopping centre in a previously disadvantaged area / high density township in the country , at over 75,000m 2 . The expansion included enlarged stores for a number of existing national tenants , a new food court and entertainment section that includes cinemas , a bowling alley , fast food outlets and restaurants .
In addition to the retail area increase , the client proposed the complete reassessment of all the building ’ s mechanical , electrical and fire services , with a view to bringing the centre on par with other properties in the Liberty Properties portfolio .
This resulted in the replacement of the existing air-conditioning installation , a comprehensive upgrade of all electrical , plumbing and fire systems , which included the construction of a standby generator plant for the entire centre .
A comprehensive upgrade of the civil infrastructure included the upgrading of traffic intersections off AZ Berman Drive , the re-planning , rationalising and addition of new parking areas and the construction of a completely new taxi rank .
A contemporary design aesthetic has been used , with clean lines and attention to key areas such as entrances
