around the site and the entrances , giving the entrances to the centre a boulevard feel .
In addition , a fully grown Jacaranda tree ( although not indigenous ) has been planted in the piazza , outside seating area , which is traditionally part and parcel of Pretoria , and specifically the older Pretoria suburbs , turning purple in spring .
The covered walkways in front of the shop fronts were landscaped with creepers , trimmed into square green columns , in an equal rhythm , creating green space surrounding the entire building .
Décor and Interiors As far as interiors go , from a project team point of view , they included the public ablutions and the office staircase lobbies . Furthermore , VH + S Architects have also been involved in the interior of the Leipoldt ’ s coffee shop .
The public ablutions have got a clean contemporary feel , with nude artworks , bigger than life size , done by local artist and lecturer , Carl Jeppe , instead of the normal ablution directional signage for public buildings . This quirky , bold statement attracts quite a bit of attention . Applied on an internally lit canvas box , these imposing sketches make quite an impression !
The choice of colour and fittings complement the overall building design . With bold charcoal and cream coloured tiles , laid in a striped pattern , you are being led into the ablutions . The design , as the rest of the building is simple , but bold .
Traffic and Safety Traffic congestion was one of the points needing to be addressed . This has been alleviated , firstly by the demolition of part of the building , making space for better ingress and egress to the site , as well as turning the vehicular system on site , into a one-way system .
Secondly , a traffic circle has been constructed on the corner of the site on Waterkloof Road , which was part of council future planning , easing circulation around the site on this prominent route .
The traffic circle received its own bit of landscaping , by replanting an old Jacaranda tree , which had to be moved due to the earthworks on the roads .
