The new design utilises the fall across the site to offer ground floor shopping at the Rivonia Road level and ground floor shopping off Waggon Street with vehicle access to the centre available from both roads . The two levels are linked by lifts and escalators in a naturally lit central atrium .
Décor and Interiors With a strong architectural focus on contemporary clean lines , keynote style and minimalistic elegance , the décor and interior basics of the recently opened Morningside Shopping Centre , located in the heart of Sandton , underpin the modern look . The radical facelift has transformed the centre into an iconic and trendsetting structure .
“ The main aesthetic vision for the centre was to create an elegant and modern location that would suit its surroundings and cater for the upmarket patrons in the area ”, notes Patrick Flanagan of Flanagan and Gerard Property Development and Investment . “ We wanted to move away from the conventional shopping centre look . Various interior elements were taken into consideration , as well as the use and application of environmentally responsible practices where possible .”
A focal point of the centre ’ s interior is the fresh and unconventional hanging light bouquet , which presides over the double volume atrium in the centre . The five piece light installation was created by well-known Cape Town based artist , Heath Nash , who specialises in turning waste into art .
Heath ’ s artworks are in huge demand , gracing homes and corporate head offices , while at the same time , reducing landfills .
This young award-winning South African designer worked with his team to create the spectacular lights , each of which features 3,000 white flowers cut from waste plastic milk bottles . These bottles were sourced from recycling sites across the Mother City . The creation of these visual spectaculars took just over four weeks to complete . Each light fitting encases five energy saving light bulbs and is set on timers to help conserve energy usage in the centre .
