When my husband and I first became involved with Architect and Builder Magazine in 2000 , one of my first tasks was to take photographs at the brand new Canal Walk for some firms advertising on our feature of the centre . It was my first experience seeing retail from the design and construction perspective and it ’ s only fitting that Canal Walk is the first project to be featured in this Retail Retrospective .
This is the first time that Architect and Builder has ever published a retrospective , taking advantage of our extensive archives to produce a comprehensive overview of retail projects featured in the magazine over the last 22 years . 88 projects equates to 685 pages , 1,200 images and 135,000 words .
Although quite a mammoth task it has been fascinating to view projects that we haven ’ t been seen in decades and follow the evolution of retail development and design over these years . On that note , I think you will find Pierre Lahaye of MDS ’ s opinion piece on the evolution of retail in South Africa very interesting reading .
