square . The desire to create a strong visual access from William Nicol that connected these public spaces , and provided the public malls and main Piazza with exposure to the bustle of William Nicol . This is the east west axis . The connection and axis from Xtreme Lifestyle created the cross mall ( south-north ) providing a second entrance to Design Quarter .
The architects have a fundamental belief that since retail centres are public buildings , they need to offer more than just a convenient place to shop . They should provide a place of gathering and socialising . They are the ‘ high streets and ‘ town squares ’ of the community and should be designed with those considerations in mind . Attention to place making and creating opportunities to experience the natural environment should be fundamental concerns .
Implementing the Brief Design Quarter has two semi-basement parking levels , upon which are placed the main retail level . The strong east / west axis extends from the main vertical circulation ( view lifts and escalators ) - through the ‘ galleria ’ malls and covered courtyard to the main open Piazza , and continues through to the parade traffic circle and vehicle drop off the William Nicol Drive . Further exposure to William Nicol is created by a sculptural ‘ icon ’ wall , consisting of a composition of a shear offshutter concrete wall , juxtaposed with a flushglazed white glass box , providing a location for retail branding and signage .
Above the retail level are two showroom levels that are accessed via walkways that surround the mall and courtyard of the retail level . Bridges link and cross the mall and courtyard ,
