to 350-Lux and includes occupancy sensors in open-plan workspaces. Timer-controlled lighting is used for all outdoor areas to minimise energy waste. Energy-efficient HVAC systems include:
• Air-cooled chillers serving retail fan coil units;
• Variable Refrigerant Volume( VRV) systems for office ventilation, with sub-metering for individual buildings;
• Zero ozone-depleting potential( 0 ODP) refrigerants and insulation were used.
Solar Installation The buildings were designed to accommodate photovoltaic( PV) solar panels on office rooftops
and podium-level carport canopies. The mall is powered by a cutting-edge 1,217.14 kWp gridtied solar PV system, combining both rooftop and carport structures to deliver clean, reliable energy. Engineered for performance and visual harmony, the system has been designed to integrate with the mall’ s contemporary architecture. The system maximises available surface area, with rooftop arrays capturing optimal sunlight exposure and custom-designed carport installations providing additional generation capacity. An added benefit includes shaded parking for visitors.
The system’ s smart design enables efficient energy production and load management, offsetting a significant portion of the mall’ s daytime electricity demand and reducing its reliance on grid-supplied power. This directly translates to lower operational costs and a substantial reduction in carbon emissions.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the Riverlands Mall solar PV system demonstrates how renewable energy can be architecturally and functionally integrated into large-scale commercial developments. It stands as a model for energy-efficient retail infrastructure in South Africa, combining innovation, sustainability, and design excellence.
Water Conservation Water-efficient taps, urinals, and toilets were installed to reduce potable water consumption. Smart irrigation systems minimise water use for landscaping.
Waste A dedicated waste storage area includes two waste compactors to facilitate operational waste
