Parkdene Boulevard, Boksburg
RETAIL DEVELOPMENT( LARGE REGIONAL MALL) AWARD
Officially opened on 24 October 2024, Parkdene Boulevard marks a confident transformation of the former Parkdene Centre into a contemporary retail destination. Situated on Rondebult Road in Boksburg, the 32,000m 2 development accommodates over 50 stores, including major anchors such as Checkers Hyper, DisChem, Planet Fitness and Edgars. The redevelopment addresses the community’ s evolving needs through improved infrastructure, accessibility and a broader mix of food, leisure and lifestyle offerings. These interventions create a welcoming environment that encourages longer dwell times and greater shopper interaction.
Parkdene Boulevard’ s revitalisation positions it as one of Gauteng’ s leading regional retail hubs. The centre plays a significant civic and economic role, stimulating local development, supporting employment and strengthening community identity. Beyond retail, it has become a valued public destination promoting wellness, sociability and everyday convenience.
The redevelopment responded to the growing retail requirements of Parkdene and the broader Boksburg region. As the area densified, the original centre, anchored by a long-standing Checkers Hyper, no longer met modern consumer expectations. Abland Property Developers, Retail Africa, Nedbank CIB and the Ellerine Group reimagined the site as a contemporary convenience-led destination delivering long-term value. Their vision produced a 31,694 square metre centre with new anchors, an improved retail mix and a refreshed architectural identity.
A key design decision was shifting from an inwardfacing layout to an open, outward-oriented scheme. The U-shaped configuration ensures maximum shopfront visibility from the central parking area and improves pedestrian movement throughout the precinct. Dual entrances to Checkers Hyper provide clarity and ease of access, supporting a more intuitive visitor experience.
Architecturally, the centre features floating steel and timber canopies, vertical Chromadek slats and generous covered walkways that introduce warmth, texture and character. Sustainable elements, including solar systems, greywater initiatives and landscaped green pockets, enhance environmental performance and the public realm. A curated tenant mix balancing national brands with food, fitness and leisure completes a cohesive, future-ready retail environment serving the community with clarity, comfort and longevity.
