Open and Closed, Designed for the Garden Route A defining aspect of Garden Walk is its deliberate balance between open and enclosed environments. Rather than adopting a conventional, fully enclosed shopping mall model, the design responds directly to the Garden Route’ s unpredictable weather, creating a centre where people can shop, meet and spend time comfortably whether the day brings sunshine or rain.
This approach allows the development to benefit from the region’ s distinctive outdoor environment while still providing the protection and
convenience expected from a contemporary retail centre. Covered routes and enclosed spaces provide shelter when required, while landscaped pedestrian areas, outdoor seating and open-air destinations encourage visitors to engage with the surrounding environment when conditions allow.
The result is a more outward-looking and human-scaled retail environment in which architecture, landscape and public space work together. Buildings frame pedestrian routes and gathering areas rather than turning their backs on them, creating a sequence of experiences as visitors move through the centre.
