POSTGRADUATE WRITING CENTRE, UNIVERSITY OF MPUMALANGA
Currently under construction and scheduled for completion at the end of 2026, the new Postgraduate Writing Centre forms part of the University of Mpumalanga’ s growing educational offering. Located on the West Campus, the facility will provide shared academic support spaces for students and staff, incorporating teaching venues, meeting facilities, offices and study areas.
Designed by TCRPV Architects, the project is driven by the ambition to create an academic environment that responds to its context while encouraging connection, collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Rather than imposing itself on the site, the building works with the landscape to create a place where education can flourish.
The ground floor addresses the western street edge with larger teaching venues and a covered walkway that strengthens the campus pedestrian network, creating an accessible public interface. Above, the programme shifts to smaller, more private spaces that support postgraduate work and shared academic activities, establishing a clear hierarchy between active communal spaces and quieter areas for focused learning.
Drawing inspiration from the rhythm of the surrounding historic orchards, the building is composed as a series of interconnected forms separated by landscaped courtyards, or‘ green lungs’. These outdoor spaces introduce daylight, natural ventilation and views deep into the plan while creating opportunities for interaction and reflection. The eastern landscape terraces into the courtyards, reinforcing the relationship between the natural and built environments.
A warm palette of textured brick and concrete reflects the wider campus material language, while carefully controlled openings, brick breeze blocks and passive solar shading enhance environmental performance. Together with its landscaped courtyards and sheltered public spaces, the building creates an inviting setting that encourages interaction and focused study.
Through its considered contextual response, the Postgraduate Writing Centre establishes a distinctive academic environment that reflects TCRPV Architects’ approach to creating purposeful architecture that enhances both the experience of its users and its relationship with place.
