UNIVERSITY OF MPUMALANGA STUDENT RESIDENCE, MBOMBELA
For TCRPV Architects, the design of student accommodation extends beyond providing spaces for sleeping and studying. Drawing on the practice’ s experience in educational architecture, its approach focuses on creating supportive and inclusive communities where students can connect, learn and develop within a secure, residential environment.
The University of Mpumalanga student residence is under construction and due for completion at the end of 2026. Carefully integrated into the university’ s masterplan, the development reinforces the collaborative character of the wider campus while establishing its own identity and sense of belonging.
The residence has been designed in accordance with the DHET minimum norms and standards for student housing, together with relevant statutory, safety and universal-access requirements. Its planning creates a considered progression from shared and semi-public areas to quieter, more private residential spaces.
At the centre of the development is a secure landscaped courtyard framed by study spaces and supported by a centrally positioned entertainment room. Together, these facilities encourage informal interaction, recreation and focused academic activity. The residence is further organised into smaller‘ family’ units, allowing more personal communities to develop within the larger student body. A dedicated apartment for an on-site house parent provides an additional layer of support, supervision and continuity.
Natural light and ventilation are integral to the design, enhancing comfort and wellbeing while helping to reduce operational energy demand. Durable, low-maintenance materials have also been selected to support longevity and responsible lifecycle performance. Facebrick lends the building warmth and a human scale, while carefully resolved brick detailing introduces texture, character and a recognisably residential quality.
Through its emphasis on community, environmental responsibility and student wellbeing, TCRPV Architects has created more than a place of accommodation. The new residence is conceived as a resilient home where students can feel secure, form lasting relationships and thrive both academically and socially.
