For the design team, this presented an opportunity to explore what contemporary African architecture might look like beyond familiar stereotypes. Rather than relying on literal references to traditional forms, the architects sought to reinterpret cultural motifs through advanced materials, fabrication technologies and architectural expression.
Reinterpreting Ivorian Craft Traditions While the building’ s form establishes its presence, the façade provides its cultural narrative. A fully glazed envelope is wrapped in a secondary screen inspired by traditional Ivorian textiles and basketry. Rather than reproducing these references literally, GLH Architects developed an abstract pattern composed of laser-cut stainless steel panels arranged in a series of diagonal bands and diamond-shaped openings.
Elliptical Geometry The embassy’ s most striking feature is its sculptural elliptical form. The building takes the shape of an oval wrapped in a spiralling ribbon that appears independent from the glass façade.
The geometry creates a dynamic presence that changes dramatically depending on the viewer’ s position. Approaching along Government Road, the building appears to shift and transform, alternately revealing its full mass and then compressing into a slender profile.
The architects describe the form as a continuous spiral generated from the natural slope of the site. The façade wraps around the structure in a fluid gesture, creating the impression of a woven fabric rising from the landscape. This sense of movement reinforces themes of progress, continuity and collective aspiration while giving the embassy a memorable civic identity.
