THE RESERVE, PAARDEVLEI
Situated within the vibrant and rapidly evolving Paardevlei precinct of Somerset West, The Reserve represents a sophisticated departure from the traditional office typology. Conceived as a contemporary commercial hub, the development prioritises a human-scaled environment that supports professional identity, public engagement and a more grounded response to its context.
Developed by Soar Developments and designed by Twofivefive Architects, the building is centred around a landscaped public space, creating a welcoming urban courtyard that forms the social heart of the development. By organising the building mass around this central void, the design replaces internal corridors
with active pedestrian routes and shared greenery. More than just a transition zone, this space is activated by a ground-floor coffee shop and complemented by integrated seating and generous landscaping. This creates a more informal, campuslike atmosphere where everyday interaction is encouraged.
A primary driver for the design was the rejection of the anonymity often found in traditional office blocks. To combat the corporate maze feel, each unit is given a clear identity through individual entrances, allowing businesses to establish a visible presence and a sense of ownership. This approach improves wayfinding and creates a more legible, welcoming environment for visitors.
