Architect and Builder Offices Retrospective | Page 95

Moving through the doors , the visitor is greeted by the peaceful and relaxed , but also exciting , ambience created by the generous space and bustling activity of the atrium . The grand triple volume , together with the generous use of glass , creates a visual connection between all levels , while natural light illuminates the entire building . Connectivity , movement and circulation are further enhanced by the introduction of a link bridge between the office plates flanking the eastern and western sides of the atrium . The position of the bridge acts as filter between the public and private space of the building , as security booms are placed inconspicuously on the same line . By rotating the office blocks and squeezing the far ends of the atrium closer together , the rhythmic perspective created by the columns is increased , adding to the depth perception of the volume . As this area is used mainly as the restaurant for the building , the architects introduced stainless steel collars on the columns , reducing the height to a comfortable scale not overpowering the users .
Turning on the axis of the link bridge exposes the internal lobbies and cores . By placing the lifts , toilets and staircases as opposites in the core , an opportunity was created to introduce frameless glass doors leading to the office plates as a security line , satisfying the requirement to keep the public areas as open and free as possible while controlling movement throughout the building . The internal staircase of the building is designed to be a comfortable vertical link between the floor plates , enhanced by the transparent glass balustrade and light washed glazed panelling introduced on the back wall .
Office wings are based on a 17.5m width , as a result of the parking module filtering through the structure . Flexibility of the building is enhanced by the large open office plates ventilated by a chilled water central air-conditioning system . Access and escape routes are placed to satisfy all statutory requirements but , together with the positioning of the core node , the architects managed to allow for limitless office layout permutations .
Conclusion The project was delivered on time and within its pre-approved budget limit , once more reiterating the outcome of a successful partnership between the architects , the interior designer , and the client .
