Pick ‘ n Pay Super Distribution Centre , Eastport Logistics Park
INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD
The construction of a new 163,783m 2 distribution centre ( DC ) to replace Pick n Pay ’ s existing DC operations and three smaller facilities was recently completed . This is the largest DC in South Africa and services all of Pick n Pay ’ s Inland stores . It is situated within Eastport Logistics Park , the flagship logistics development of Fortress Real Estate Investments , along the R21 in Kempton Park . The facility incorporates expansion plans , future customer demand , and will hugely increase stock deliveries to stores while being able to hold slower moving lines , giving customers an extensive , but tailored product range without additional distribution costs .
The consolidated DC is designed to optimise productivity and efficiency by incorporating groceries , perishables , fresh produce , all general merchandise and imported goods under one roof . This avoids duplication of supply chain costs and is therefore an opportunity for Pick n Pay to obtain a competitive edge from their supply chain .
A harmonious blend of architectural innovation and engineering expertise is essential for the effective planning and design of a modern logistics distribution centre . The professional team considered these factors in providing the client with a facility that optimises operations , enhances productivity and lays the foundation for a resilient and agile supply chain .
The industrial engineers collaborated closely with the team to design an optimal layout that balances storage , operational flow and flexibility and also determining the best arrangement for operational flows . Ultimately the team has designed a robust and adaptable structural framework that supports heavy loads , tall storage racks , and potential expansions .
From both a construction and logistics point of view , the DC is designed around the latest methodologies and techniques . Construction methodologies include concrete tilt up walls and columns , creating a resilient and robust shell . The structural steel roof framing , which was softly curved and exaggerated by the use of continuous double radiused roof sheets over the roof monitors , creates seamless and gentle lines in order to soften the large architectural form . The roof also functionally follows the racking profiles as tightly as possible to avoid excessive structural heights .
Tall internal racking requirements , which maximise the efficiencies of space , make the flatness of the warehouse floor a critical construction item . The highly specialised , laser-levelled , post-tensioned concrete floor allows for limited joints and therefore the most efficient machine handling equipment movement within the DC .
The Pick n Pay Super Distribution Centre at Eastport Logistics Park is a mammoth achievement from both a design and engineering perspective and sets the bar high on what can be achieved with Industrial facility construction in South Africa .
