Dr . Pixley ka Isaka Seme Memorial Hospital , commonly known as Dr . Pixley Memorial Hospital , is a wellknown healthcare center located near the Bridge City Mall in KwaZulu-Natal . The hospital is named after Pixley ka Isaka Seme , a well-known political figure and founding member of the African National Congress . The fundamental imperative was to deliver a 500-bed hospital due to the influx of the healthcare demand in Inanda , Ntuzuma and KwaMashu and to alleviate the pressure on the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Phoenix and the Addington Hospital in South Beach , Durban .
The hospital is a district-level facility that offers a variety of medical services to the surrounding community . It provides inpatient and outpatient treatments , as well as emergency care , general medicine , surgery , obstetrics and gynecology , paediatrics , and other specialist departments . The hospital is divided into 10 blocks with 4 blocks on the west of the building and 6 blocks on the east side of the building . The blocks are separated by a thoroughfare referred to as Hospital Street which enables easy circulation within the hospital .
This is a high-tech specialised medical facility with a world class heating , ventilation and air conditioning system . This system includes nine megawatts of cooling power , a resolute air handling unit , centrifugal watercooled chillers , and closed-circuit cooling towers . All eight operating rooms have a camera linked to a lecture theatre to be utilised for live feedback and for training and teaching purposes . There is a dedicated infectious disease ward with pressure cascading and isolation rooms with room pressurisation monitoring and approximately 3km of piping providing vital services .
