When it comes to architectural photography , how do you work and what do you feel makes for a great image ? I am obsessed with natural lighting , high contrast , shadows and clean lines . Wherever possible , an architectural photographer needs to keep all vertical and horizontal lines perfect !
I am never a fan of images that are over edited and I love to use people in interior spaces to show movement . Time of day is super important to me as well , bright light and mid afternoon sun need to be avoided where possible . I have also shot many times with some decent 1990 ’ s music playing in my ears !
What is your favourite building you shot and why ? Nelson Mandela University ’ s Oceans Science Campus is my favourite for sure . My first feature and front cover for a prominent publication ( Architect and Builder - Volume 74 - Issue 1 )
Described as a verandah with a 3 storey foyer , the buildings inside spaces look to the front creating endless opportunities for layering within the triple volume space . Old meets new as the 1970 ’ s building connects to NMU ’ s latest educational space . Cutting edge laboratories and many opportunities await learners .
Did I mention that there ’ s a bright yellow 3 storey diving tank as well ? Forming part of the design and build , the tank is used for training and has viewing portholes for anyone that ’ s interested in the divers !
What should architects consider when working with a photographer to ensure quality pics ? Working “ with ” the photographer is the key word here . Simply asking a photographer to go to site and take pretty pics is never that simple . Prior inspections and planning is required by both parties to ensure a great final product . Clean and completed sites make all the difference as well !
Architects and construction companies pour thousands of hours and massive sums of money into their projects . Proper professional photography is the final step in showcasing their work to the world . No cell phone or someone ’ s uncle that has a camera can produce the images that we can . Invest in professional photography !
