the town and the relationship to ‘ Die Braak ’. The existing retail centre behind the old historical Dros Hotel had to be demolished completely and a new student residential complex was erected behind the old building .
The new interventions create animated street activity through commercial usage while achieving a sensitive continuity with the typical Stellenbosch streetscape .
A forward-thinking Space which Honours Heritage The resulting street frontage is now composed of three elements that combine to respect the
context of Stellenbosch ’ s heritage townscape , namely the historic Drostdy building on Alexander Street , the new housing wing along Bird Street , and a central glazed atrium and open courtyard that forms the social hub of the development , respectfully and sustainably retaining elements of the existing street frontage .
The new building on Bird Street has been restricted to three levels , with the top level set back , and expressing the existing horizontal lines of the historic Drostdy buildings and freestanding façade buildings and designed in a simple , white-walled contemporary Cape Vernacular architecture so as to be non-imposing
