Design Concept The design combines modern architectural elements with the town ’ s distinctive cultural heritage and vernacular . Its articulation creates the impression of a collection of structures in terms of elevation and roof silhouette . The building integrates seamlessly with the existing structure at the juncture of Dorp and Stadler Streets . The constructed form defines the edges of Dorp , Adam Tas , and Stadler Road , creating a communal courtyard garden in the centre . The building height is proportional
to the scale of the surrounding area , with the uppermost storey receding from the street to the point where it is nearly imperceptible from street level .
The particular challenge of this project was to create a building with modern appeal while remaining appropriate to the historic location and appreciative of its relationship to Dorp Street , one of South Africa ’ s oldest historical streets . Specialists were involved in protecting the two existing oak trees on the Dorp Street side of the site as these have historical value .
