This issue is a little different from the norm . For the first time , Architect and Builder Magazine is publishing an issue with the focus on retail developments . It is an indication of the current growth in the retail sector that all of our featured projects as well as all ten pages of Project Watch , which for this issue has been renamed Retail Watch , are exclusively retail projects . It is exciting to see the variety of development and redevelopment taking place in the sector – from upmarket suburban lifestyle malls to ground breaking retail exposure in the most isolated rural communities . Existing malls are also expanding and adapting to the needs of the post Covid shopper , with an increased focus on food and beverage options as well as entertainment .

RETAIL RETROSPECTIVE Alongside this issue we are also very proud to publish our first ever Retrospective . Focusing on retail developments published in Architect and Builder Magazine since 2000 , this Retrospective will serve as the go to reference for the evolution of retail development and design in South Africa .

44 DRAKENSTEIN SENTRUM Designed by SVA International , this 9,000m 2 centre is inspired by Cape Vernacular & Winelands Shed Architecture .

52 MERINO MALL The original showground barn structures were used as inspiratio and became a key design feature , with the barn shape becoming a distinctive visual reference .
