THE AVALON, CAPE TOWN The Avalon is situated in Hope Street on the urban fringe of Cape Town`s CBD, bridging the hustle of the inner city and the mountain suburbs. The site has significant heritage buildings of differing eras and styles that will be retained and incorporated into the design. The project will include 150 residential apartments and a small boutique hotel, bringing back city living to this corner which once was home to the old Avalon Hotel. Along with ground floor retail, restaurants, and commercial offices, The Avalon will yet again activate the life and soul of this node. There are also separate off-street garden apartments that respond to the smaller scale urban fabric on the north side of the site. The architecture intends to recognise the old and bring a fresh design to the new delivering a simple contemporary urban architecture. Vivid Architects have picked cues from the existing façade lines, intentionally designing a strong regular base, a setback elemental body and a celebrated top with duplex apartments, forming an appropriate urban response. The base of the new building has a defined rhythm of fresh white columns in direct response to the rhythm of the 1903 building. The body of the building is defined by a palette of bold finishes in black brick, white accents, and glass. Directly above the 1903 building, a flush glazed form extends from this building to house the hotel rooms, with the heritage Project Watch building to be repurposed into a restaurant that will bring this beauty back to its former glory. The top of the building is a modern interpretation of traditional urban mansard architecture, clad with a glittering copper, showcasing views of the city, sea and mountains. Vivid sees The Avalon as a new landmark building on the Cape Town fringe that will exude a timeless and contemporary archi- tecture, make a positive contribution to the public realm and the local community.
