RECORD BREAKING ROOF Sky-formed , concealed-fix roof sheeting has been rolled in continuous lengths to avoid joints and potential weak spots within the roof profile while ensuring limited damage to sheets extruded directly onto the roof . To achieve this , the longest sheet length of 280m was required . The roofing profiler and contractor achieved an official Guinness World Record for the longest roof span covered by a single metal corrugated sheet . The roof profile , while aesthetically looking entirely curved , does in fact have a flat pitched portion central to the roof space in order to avoid a flat spot on the curved roof .
LOGISTICS The site layout , conceptual planning arrangements and operational flows were developed to optimise the flow of vehicles , equipment and people with the goal of increasing operational efficiencies , decreasing CO2 emissions , and optimising staff efficiencies .
The internal material handling solution is a combination of operational best practices and different technologies . The building , the material handling equipment , and the operational solution all work in unison to create an effective and sustainable solution that enables Pick n Pay to service their stores and customers more efficiently , accurately , and cost effectively than before .
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING Site Geology The regional geology map indicates that the site is located on chert-rich dolomite . Various syenite intrusions are present and the Pretoria syenite dyke traverses through the central portion of the site . On the sides of the syenite , chert residuum is generally present at the surface which is underlain by dolomite residuum and dolomite bedrock .
Special foundations are warranted when developing on dolomitic terrains and the site was classified as a D3 development . All structures on this site were founded on reinforced concrete raft foundations or ground beams designed to span across a 5m sinkhole ( or 5m loss of support ). It was recommended by the geotechnical engineer to construct a compacted soil raft below all concrete foundations .
The appropriate precautionary measures for D3 areas were adhered to for the entire site . This applies in particular to the installation of wet services and the backfilling of all trenches . Measures to capture and effectively remove stormwater from the site were implemented to ensure that no accumulations of surface water occur as a result of inadequate drainage .
Structural System The three warehouses consist of a Dry Goods , Perishables and RRU warehouse . The structural column grid on the perimeter of the warehouse is 8.175m and 8.05m and the internal column grid is 32.1m x 32.7m . The three warehouses have curved steel roofs supported on concrete columns and concrete foundations . The steel roof consists of
