The South African National Blood Service ( SANBS ) recently unveiled their new state-of-the-art facility in Mount Edgecombe , KwaZulu-Natal . The 8,500m ² building will be their regional headquarters and will also house their flagship donor centre and their first ‘ Journey of Blood ’ educational exhibition component , aimed at showcasing the importance of blood and the scientific processes involved between donation and transfusion . The vision is to raise awareness of blood transfusion in the province in order to increase the donor pool and eventually supply enough blood for the province ’ s own requirements .
Site SANBS procured a brownfield site with the intention to transform the existing structures into their new office and laboratory facility . The existing building , essentially a fairly featureless warehouse , was initially built as a temporary casino , and then became a call centre for a financial institution . The original plan comprised a large warehouse type space , devoid of natural light , that was surrounded by cellular office and service rooms . While the shell itself was a suitable size to accommodate the required functions , it needed considerable work to create the welcoming and inspiring destination for donors , and the high-tech centre for scientific research , that SANBS required . Architects , SVA International , in association with an interior designer , set about to transform the building .
