3D AUGMENTED REALITY READILY AVAILABLE ON YOUR MOBILE
Effective design communication is just one of the daily challenges engineers and architects struggle with . Designs are printed on paper in 2D and at best 3D , with a lot of detail . But not all the detail can be shown on a single layout which results in using large amounts of paper . On a multidisciplinary project you have architects , engineers , contractors etc , all collaborating to produce the design for the client . If everyone involved is not on the same page with regards to coordination , mistakes creep in that generally have time and cost implications . Imagine the client and each team member having access to the design in 3D Augmented Reality on their mobile device in seconds . This is now possible with the brilliant new application – AUGmentecture .
Lombard Consulting Engineers has always been a leader in implementing state of the art design software for building and system design . This innovative way of thinking has led one of their directors , Carl Coetzee to the AUGmentecture platform . Knowing the challenges with communicating designs , he explored the application and has started to implement this platform on new projects as an effective 3D communication tool .
But how does it work ? The architect or engineer can export their design from their preferred design platform such as Revit or SketchUp into the AUGmentecture application . The design is uploaded onto the AUG cloud and can be accessed by various users . The user on site needs to download the free application on their mobile device , launch the application and press scan a new model . With their mobile they scan the QR code received from the architect or engineer and download the construction model . In Blueprint mode the model is superimposed to scale on the 2D layouts in Augmented Reality . In Surface mode the model can be scaled to any size and placed on any flat surface . The model will then pop up in 3D AR on their device . They can now inspect the design from every angle , zoom in and make out even the smallest details . The AUG platform is also ‘ location aware ’ and can be placed on site , to scale , with the correct coordinates loaded into the model . This allows end users to see the designs in Augmented Reality , in place and to scale long before the final product has been constructed .
Printing coordination or concept drawings is a costly time-consuming exercise . The plans are big and difficult to show the smaller detail . The installer / Contractor on site rarely has access to the wealth of 3D information on site , which has now been made readily accessible using AUG .
