n 2015, Pure Design completed the transformation of Johnson
& Johnson’s traditional pigeonhole office space in Cape Town
into a radically open-plan environment. The renovated space
was hailed by the client as a transformational and value-adding
environment and it was only natural that when a new division
of the global brand needed to establish offices in Cape Town as
part of launching their footprint in Africa, they turned to the Pure
Design team.
J&J Global Public Health (GPH), which aims to mobilise
its global public health capabilities and resources behind
a unified, multidisciplinary effort to deliver a sustainable,
measurable impact against significant public health needs, was
to be located in the same building as Johnson & Johnson’s
operational office on a dedicated floor.

The Brief
The brief given to Interior Design firm, Pure Design, by the client
was to create a home for Johnson & Johnson Global Public
Health’s first African offices. The design was to reflect a sense of
place, providing the ideal environment for multidiscplinary teams
to do research in. The look and feel had to be different to that of
the administrative offices which the designers had completed
in 2015 and provide the division with its own distinct identity.
Design-wise, the request was for a subtly African flavour, but
with a contemporary edge.
