AQHA FEATURE: CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF BUFFALO RANCH AUSTRALIA
16
“
TWO DECADES OF WORLD CLASS GENETICS, LASTING PARTNERSHIPS AND INDUSTRY PROGRESS
Significant as those numbers are, they represent something larger. They are the accumulated confidence of thousands of mare owners, breeders and trainers who invested in building the next generation of Australian performance horses.
A New Chapter
As with any enduring program, twenty years has also brought change.
After playing a pivotal role in establishing and growing Buffalo Ranch Australia from its inception, Vince and Sally Bonello stepped back as Australian agents in 2024 to focus on family and other business interests. Their contribution to the Australian performance horse industry reaches far beyond the importation of frozen semen. Through their vision, dedication and long-standing partnership with the Plummer family, they helped build one of Australia’ s most recognised frozen semen programs and introduced generations of breeders to world-class genetics.
For Plummer, the relationship long ago stopped being commercial.
“ Twenty years of business together, that is just business,” he said.“ Vince and Sally have become family to me. I have had my ups and downs over twenty years of life, and so have they. Through it all the bonds of love and respect have only grown deeper, even at the expense of the business bottom line. There is not an inch of daylight between us.”
As the Bonellos’ circumstances changed, the decision for them to step back was made together, and it was Vince and Sally who recommended Blair Keyte as their successor. A long-time SDP Buffalo Ranch client with more than 30 years’ involvement in the Australian performance horse industry, Blair had already been working alongside the program, assisting mare owners through recent breeding seasons. The transition gave breeders continuity while positioning the program for its next chapter of growth.
Looking Towards the Next Twenty Years
While the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect, the focus remains firmly on what comes next.
The recently launched SDP Breeders Bonus represents the next chapter in supporting Australian breeders. The incentive program is estimated to distribute more than $ 80,000 annually in Australia by 2031, rewarding SDP-bred horses competing in cutting, campdrafting and potentially additional performance disciplines. As part of a global incentive program, Australian breeders will share in a dedicated portion of the international prize pool for each foal crop. It reflects the same philosophy that began twenty years ago. Not simply supplying elite genetics, but creating long-term value for the breeders who choose them.
A Legacy That Continues
The timing of this milestone is particularly poignant.
As the industry remembers TR DUAL REY following his recent passing, it is fitting to acknowledge the extraordinary legacy of the stallion who helped launch Buffalo Ranch’ s Australian journey. His influence lives on through generations of Australian-bred horses, the families who continue to breed his descendants and the success stories written in competition arenas across the country.
For Plummer, Australia’ s support of that horse returned far more than breeding fees. The Australian breeding season, September to January, complements the American season of February to July, giving the business stability across the full year. It also gave him a second home. He has competed in Australia four times and made the futurity finals on each occasion, and he travels to Tamworth for the NCHA Futurity each June.
“ My favourite memory to date is my daughter Gretchen competing in the 2023 Australian Futurity Senior Youth and seeing the joy on her face doing what she loves,” he said.“ That is the third generation of my family establishing a connection in Australia. Those roots are growing deeper by the day.”
Twenty years after Vince Bonello flew to Utah, the vision the two families shared continues to grow. What began with a handful of stallions has become one of Australia’ s leading frozen semen programs, connecting breeders with worldclass genetics and helping shape the future of Australian performance horses.
“ That endorsement meant a great deal,” Plummer said.“ Blair is of equal integrity and character. She is far more tech savvy, she has a real talent for connecting with people, and she cares deeply about serving the needs of breeders. She respects the foundation that has been put in place here, and she represents our stallions and the interests of their owners better than I had hoped. The future is bright with Blair.”
His hope for the arrangement is straightforward.“ May our next twenty years forge a bond as strong as the one I continue to have with the Bonellos, and may we keep building in Australia from the deep roots that have taken hold.”
Plummer is clear about where the credit belongs.
“ I cannot promise outcomes, but I can promise our best in product, service and support,” he said.“ We are in this together, and your success is our success. If twenty years in Australia has taught me anything, it is to focus on the breeder. No breeder, no horse. No horse, no sport. We are so grateful you chose us.”
For Buffalo Ranch Australia, the past twenty years have never really been about the stallions. They have been about the breeders who believed in them, the partnerships built along the way, and a shared commitment to leaving the Australian performance horse industry stronger for generations to come.
