When Bradley and Briony purchased Q-95128 at the 2021 Nutrien Classic Sale, they weren’ t shopping for a stallion. In fact, their focus was firmly on securing young mares to bring back to the Classic. But sometimes, a horse steps into your life and quietly rewrites the plan. They named him Springsteen“ Bruce” to those who know him best and from the moment they saw him, they knew he was something special.
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT Springsteen was presented at the 2021 sale by Isaac Westerhuis, and it was his pedigree and pre-sale footage that first captured their attention. But it was seeing him in the flesh that sealed the deal.
“ He had great balance and athleticism and a lovely temperament,” they recall.“ Even though he wasn’ t a mare and not exactly what we were looking for, he was just the perfect package for us.”
As a two-year-old, he possessed that rare combination every horseperson hopes to find natural ability, physical presence, and a mind willing to learn. It was enough to take him home, even if he hadn’ t been part of the original brief.
A VICTORY TO REMEMBER Fast forward to 2026, and Springsteen delivered one of the sport’ s biggest prizes: the 2026 Nutrien Stallion Campdraft Incentive.
For Bradley, winning such a prestigious event aboard his own horse was deeply personal.
Victories are always sweet, but there’ s something uniquely powerful about succeeding with a horse you’ ve selected, developed, and believed in from the beginning. Years of patient training, careful management, and quiet faith culminated in a moment that made every early morning and late night worthwhile.
THE HORSE BEHIND THE HEADLINES At home and on the road, Springsteen is as memorable for his personality as he is for his performance.
“ He’ s a bit of a talker,” they laugh.“ Whenever we walk up to him, he gives you a nicker.” As a two year old, trainer Phil Dawson nicknamed him“ Mr Whippy” you heard him before you saw him. Thankfully, that phase has mellowed, but the charm remains.
Now seven, Bruce is described as cruisy and chilled, a pleasure to have around. On the truck, he’ s a favourite, carrying himself with unmistakable presence. Under saddle, he combines big, strong moves with control and composure, staying in the rider’ s hands and waiting for direction, a priceless trait in campdrafting.
“ He always turns up when things get tough and you need him to step up,” they say.“ And he’ s the first one we want to ride when there’ s mustering to be done. He’ s smooth, balanced, and just beautiful to ride.”
