PG.20 AQHA HORSE TALK UPPER HORTON WINTER CHALLENGE ARTICLE: SALLY BALMAIN / PHOTO: BARBARA LEE PHOTOGRAPHY In light of the ongoing drought the Upper Horton Rodeo committee where faced with the decision of cancelling would be their 3rd event in a row so the decision was made, with the limited cattle that were available, to try their hand at running a challenge event! So on the 13th and 14th July the first Winter Challenge was held at Upper Horton. S even events where programed consisting of 3 phases each – a dry work pattern, a campdraft style wet work phase and a time trial for the majority of the events and 2 dry work patterns and a utility phase for a futurity (2/3yr old horses) and the hack challenge (open aged event with no cattle work phase). Saturday saw the running of all dry work phases for the seven challenge events and the utility phase of the futurity and hack challenge under the watchful eye of our three judges - Gloria McCormack, Michelle Main and Leon Cummins. With those two events then being done and won the presentations where held that evening at the Upper Horton Sports Club.
