A Cattle buyer by trade , his family , operates a 9,000 acre mixed farming enterprise of cropping for stock feed , sheep , lamb and wool and trade cattle . A small custom fed cattle feedlot for a meatworks in Victoria and a cow block in the Bylong Valley .
“ As a kid , the Thorns were mainly Rodeo based , and we used the horses for stock work and competing in Rodeo . Mum showed horses , and Dad always went to horse sales around the state . About 13 years ago , once our place was a bit set up and with two small children at the time , I got back into Campdrafting . I love the comradery of the horse industry – we have made some of our best friends and business contacts through horses ,” recalls Dave .

Dave went back to basics with the Stallion in preparation for Campdrafting , riding him around the property doing stock work and teaching him to be a horse firstly for 12 months . “ Then I got him rating and lapping a cow in the paddock . His first start was at Orange in November 2017 . He won the maiden from 270 entries and came 2nd in the big novice on his first outing ,” Dave said .
