Chris Ware and Jodie Mearns purchased Stylish
Player at the NCHA Select Sale as a yearling. Jodie
recalls, “We were looking for something with good
breeding but that would probably fly under the radar.
We looked at a few but we both kept coming back to
her. We ended up purchasing her through the sale for
a great price.”
Chris Ware broke her in in the Spring then she went
to Dean to see what they had.
“Dean has done a fantastic job with Pam, she is an
amazing athlete and has a real desire to work a cow,
she loves her job. But she does have a big motor, Dean
had the ability to work with that and train her superbly,”
says Jodie.
“Dean was very impressed with her right from the
beginning, he loved the way she could move her front
end, and she was remarkably balanced for a baby she
always knew where her feet where and had the amazing
ability to read a cow right from the get go,” says Jodie.
“He loved her all the way through her training.”
Jodie commented on her first impression of Stylish
Player on a cow. “I was very excited at her talent, I
actually couldn’t believe how special she was. She is
super cowy and just loves to cut.”
When asked, when did you all know that you had
something special on your hands? Jodie answered,
“Not long after Dean started her we knew we had a
good one. Besides her ability, She just gave 110% every
single time he worked her.”
Jodie commented on her first impression of Stylish
Player in the show arena. “The thing with Pam is that
she is the same at home as she is in the show pen. So I
knew that if all went well she would give it her all.”
When asked, what was your impression of her in the
first and second go rounds? Jodie answered, “She
was spot on, Dean showed her great.”
Stylish Player drew first in the Australian Quarter

her impression of her in the final. “Being first out was
a bit nerve racking, but in saying that it had proven to
be not a bad draw, so I thought well he can just lead
from the front and that’s exactly what he did. She was
the only horse to Final in all the Futurities last year and
was Victorian Futurity Champion. Even though she has
had a great career thus far people still really haven’t
seen what she can do.”
Jodie commented on how it felt to have Stylish
Player win the AQHA Open Derby. “We all new she
had the capability to win the Derby, but in cutting it
doesn’t always work that way. So when it happened
I was overwhelmed with emotion, not only did the
mare deserve the win so did Dean. Chris and I feel
very fortunate to have won the Derby, especially after
having Heavy Metal Q-73396 (IIU) win the NCHA
Futurity and Reserve Classic Champion winning the
Derby was really special for us. They say that you only
ever get one special horse in your life, we are blessed to
say that we have two.”
“ WE ARE EXCITED
FOR THE REST OF HER
SHOW CAREER ”
When asked, As an owner of the Open Derby
Champion, what does the AQHA sponsorship mean
to you? Jodie responded, “It takes a tremendous
amount of time and quite a few dollars to get a horse
to the point of showing. To have this sponsorship
really helps for us to continue on with her training
and showing. We are very grateful that the AQHA
sponsored the Derby and is so supportive of the Cutting
Horse industry. As Chris and I are both breeders and
stallion owners its also nice to win this.”
Jodie commented on what people in the cutting
horse industry been commenting to her on Stylish
Players run. “She sure is a crowd favourite, many
people have commented on how much they like her and
how special she is. Even other trainers comment on her
and where glad to see her get the win.”
Stylish Player will compete in a couple of the other
Derby’s this year and the Classics next year. “We
are excited for the rest of her show career. We are also
hoping for a couple of embryos this breeding season. A
Futurity Champion over a Derby Champion will be an
exciting baby,” said Jodie.
