Name: Joseph Wallace Age: 75 years old
Occupation: I retired as a High School Head of Mathematics in 2005. I also owned a Tuition Centre since 1979. We offered tuition to primary and high school students in most school subjects, I sold the business late last year after operating it for 47 years.
Where do you live: I live at Oakdale, NSW
Number of years as AQHA Member: I have been a member of the AQHA since 2005.
What brought you to the Western Discipline: My wife Janette had already been riding and involved with Quarter Horse shows for about 15 years. Janette was the Show Secretary for the Sydney Quarter Horse Association, and I helped in the office with entries on show days. I had no interest in horses until I retired from teaching in 2005 and had my first ride at 55 years of age. I thought it looked easy, but quickly realised I had a lot to learn. I was bitten by the bug and was lucky to have the wonderful horse Blue Denim N Lace( Lace) to help me improve. Over the next few years, I rode at Winderadeen, Hunter Valley and SQHA shows.
When Lace retired, I began riding Winderadeen One Hot Lie( Hottie) and we developed a great bond. Our favourite events were Showmanship, Horsemanship and Trail.
I’ ve had lessons from lots of different trainers since I started and they’ ve all helped contribute to my improvement. My wife is the most influential person to assist me with my riding as we work together most days preparing for shows. We train at our home and practice patterns before a show, giving each other advice to fine tune or riding.
I now own my super talented horse KND Potential Enterprise Q-91165( Titan). I bought him as a three year old and kept him in Matt Frieberg’ s barn for a couple of years. Matt did really well, giving him a solid foundation.
Titan is amazing and such a kind horse to work with. The fact that he is a tall, stunning buckskin is just icing on the cake. Our favourite classes are Showmanship, Trail and most recently Western Riding. Western Riding has been my goal for the last twenty years and Titan was the horse that made it possible.
One of my most memorable moments was winning Select Amateur Showmanship at NPHA three years in a row, with three different horses. More recently, my highlight has been winning the Select Amateur Western Riding at Q26. I believe that to achieve your goals, it takes time, a lot of time. You need to get in the saddle and learn as much as you can from those around you. What works today with your horse might not work tomorrow, that is quite OK, they’ re not robots. But when you make a breakthrough with them, it is so satisfying.
