Mr . Kuras ’ Backstory Revealed A little history behind our legendary substitute teacher

Mr . Kuras
commonly reminisce about their time at Rice by talking of people such as Mr . Filo , Coach Fracassa , Mr . Kossakowski , Brother Mc-
Intyre , and many more .
Perhaps among these names we will soon include the great Mr . Kuras . Once a full-time English teacher and now an All-Star substitute .
Mr . Kuras grew up on the west side of Detroit in Warrendale . He attended U of D Jesuit , and then went to college at Detroit Mercy . Coming out of college , he took a job at the Strohs Brewery Company . Mr . Kuras travelled all across the country in his role as Director of Sales Training .
“ It was a great job ,” said Mr . Kuras . “ It allowed me to travel places I had never been before and use
my passion for teaching .”
Driven by this passion , he decided to go back to school . He started subbing at Brother Rice in 2002 while working toward his Master ’ s degree . He later joined the English Department staff full-time and has been a regular sub for the last few years .
“ I still remember the first time I had Mr . Kuras as a sub ,” said Junior Drew Karcher . “ When I returned home , I discovered that my Mom had already learned of a detention I received from Mr . Kuras . She flipped , but my brother was there and shouted , ‘ How dare you disrespect Mr . Kuras !’ ”

ing to give them a greater advantage at the next level . The new space will include computers for students to learn CAD , as the current labs do , but now there will be a space for teams of students to work together and brainstorm , build , and store projects .
While the improvements to the Engineering labs and ARC are exciting , it ’ s the new locker rooms that most students are talking about .
“ It ’ s great to see ,” says Junior Jose Segura . “ It ’ s an awesome opportunity , and the students at Rice should be very excited , especially the incoming Freshman and all future classes .”
Many students are curious about when renovations will be taking place . According to Mr . Reidy , locker room construction will start in early May and hopefully be done before school begins in the Fall .
Currently , anyone entering the locker rooms is met with sweatsoaked walls and the aromatic scent of B . O . Then there are the aged showers , untouched since the last century . So it is no surprise that the locker rooms are going to be one of the first huge improvements .
Next year , students and visitors will find new lockers that are adequate in size for all athletes , no matter the season or the equipment . In addition , we ’ ll see new restrooms and hygienic showers . Another essential is the installation of a ventilation system .
Not only will big improvements be made to the locker room , but the ARC will be improved dramatically , as well , starting with the name : Next year , this space will be the Center for Learning and Achievement .
This new center will be divided into four cores : The Institute for Academic Success , the Tim Manganello Institute for Leadership , the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship , and the Institute for Character and Citizenship .
After learning the foundations of success from his days at Rice , Tim
Tim Manganello ‘ 68
Manganello ‘ 68 wanted to give back in an unforgettable way . His intention behind a $ 1 million donation last Fall was to provide leadership principles that define what it means to be a Brother Rice student .
The Institute for Academic Success will be the new Achieve-Plus center . This will finally give the much-loved Mrs . Beyer a permanent home , and the students will have a better chance to expand their learning and study habits .
