National Human Rights Commission Takes Cognizance of Brutal Attack on Dalit Student

The National Human Rights Commission( NHRC) has taken suo-motu cognizance of media reports regarding the attack on a Dalit student from class 11 in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu. The attack was allegedly carried out by some upper-caste boys from the student ' s locality. The commission has issued notices to the Director General of Police of the state and the District Collector, asking them to submit a detailed report within four weeks.

According to reports, a Dalit student in Tamil Nadu ' s Tirunelveli district was attacked by an unknown gang who severed his fingers. The 11th-grade student, Devendran, son of a daily wage laborer named Thanga Ganesh, was on his way to his school in Palayamkottai to appear for an exam when the attack took place. The assailants dragged him out of the bus and attacked him with a sickle, resulting in the severing of his left hand fingers. In an attempt to intervene, Devendran ' s father was also attacked. Following the attack on March 12, the assailants fled, and the student was immediately hospitalized at the government hospital in Tirunelveli. After a seven-hour-long surgery, the doctors successfully reattached his fingers.
Thanga Ganesh works at a brick kiln in the southern part of the district, in the village of Ariyanayagpuram. The gang allegedly also attacked his father, causing severe injuries to his head and other parts of his body. Devendran’ s family claimed that the attack was a retaliation for a recent kabaddi match where he had played a key role in defeating an upper-caste team. Devendran is considered an excellent kabaddi player.
Devendran ' s father also stated that the attack was related to caste. Thanga Ganesh said, " Three people from the Thevar community from the neighboring village attacked him. This is a caste-based crime. We belong to the SC( Scheduled Caste) community."
Devendran ' s uncle, Suresh, has demanded justice. After the incident came to light, the Human Rights Commission took cognizance and stated that this was a serious violation of the student ' s human rights. The commission has issued notices to the Director General of Police of Tamil Nadu and the District Collector of Thoothukudi, asking them to submit a detailed report within four weeks.
