Reservation on Religious Grounds is Unconstitutional: RSS
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh( RSS) has termed religion-based reservation as unconstitutional. According to the Sangh, courts have rejected such actions by the government multiple times. Still, those pursuing such political steps are going against the intent of the Constitution’ s framers.
After discussions at the annual Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha held last month in Bengaluru, RSS Sarkaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale said that the Constitution does not permit religionbased reservations. Such measures go against the vision of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. Previous attempts by the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra to implement religionbased reservation for Muslims were struck down by the High Courts and the Supreme Court. The fact that such attempts continue is surprising and concerning.
He emphasized that our role models should be those who represent the nation’ s well-being and unity— not those known for intolerance or those who don’ t represent the character of this nation. Opposing figures like Aurangzeb is not a matter of religion, but an issue of national unity. Although
India achieved political independence in 1947, mental colonialism still persists, and it is vital to eliminate this mindset. Individuals with an invader-like mentality continue to pose a threat to the country. Therefore, we must decide who we associate with our nation’ s culture— not based on religion, but on character and values. This is the firm belief of the RSS.
He cited the renaming of Delhi’ s " Aurangzeb Road " to " Abdul Kalam Road " as an example, questioning why figures like Dara Shikoh— who truly embodied composite culture— were never highlighted. Should we make icons of those who opposed India’ s culture or celebrate those who worked in accordance with our traditions?
He further stated that fighting against foreign invaders, whether before or during British rule, was all part of the struggle for independence. Maharana Pratap’ s efforts were part of that fight. Those with a mindset of aggression are a threat to the nation, and we must decide whom to associate with India’ s cultural heritage— not based on religion, but on values and character.
As the RSS approaches its 100th year of service, many are curious about how the organization views this milestone. He clarified that such occasions are not for celebration, but for introspection and renewed dedication to their mission. It is also a moment to acknowledge the contributions of selfless volunteers and their families, as well as the great saints who have guided the movement.
