April is Adopt a Greyhound month . Have you ever interacted with a Greyhound ? Have you ever even seen one ? Did you know that they are all retired from a racing career ?
Since 1997 , Nittany Greyhounds , located in Port Matilda ( near State College ), has been placing retired racers in loving homes . President Bob Koch notes , " Once you have a greyhound , you will never go back to a different breed . They are just so special -- loving , sweet , and gentle ."
Greyhounds have been around for thousands of years , and at one time , only members of royalty were permitted to own them . You ' ll find them depicted in ancient Egyptian ruins , in hundreds of year old tapestries and mosaics in Italy , and in art everywhere around the world .
The racing industry in this country has all but shut down at this point , with only two tracks left , both in West Virginia . But several other countries have thriving race tracks so there ' s no shortage of these gorgeous dogs . Koch adds , " We are now importing dogs from Australia and Ireland . We do occasionally get dogs from West Virginia , but now , most of our dogs are coming in from other countries ."
So what kind of home life can you expect with a retired greyhound ? Koch says , " They transition amazingly well from track to home ; sometimes they can live with cats , sometimes not ; some tolerate children , although we don ' t recommend greyhounds around very small kids ; they get along with other breeds of dogs as well ... in some ways , they are very cat-like . They are clean and don ' t require a lot of exercise in general ( there are exceptions of course )." Greyhounds are generally healthy and can live to age 12-14 .
