“ Oprah ” and Author , Jacqueline Davies , Visits Jersey Shore Elementary School
Each year , the students and staff at Jersey Shore Elementary School look forward to celebrating Read Across America Week ! The week is earmarked by guest readers , door decorating contests , and themed dress up days .
Last month , students and their caregivers streamed into the cafeteria for a favorite tradition hosted by the Title I Reading Team - Title I Bingo Night ! Every child went home with a free book and could select a bonus book if they won a round of bingo . In addition , each child was given a raffle ticket . Throughout the evening , random tickets were drawn , and students selected from an array of gift cards from McDonald ’ s , Subway , Burger King , Amazon , and Dairy Queen , to share with their loved ones . New t-shirts with characters from Dr . Seuss books promoting students to “ Be Kind ” were also gift options for lucky ticket winners .
This year , the reading team had planned a special surprise to kick off our One Book , One School Event . With just 15 minutes left until everyone had to depart for the night , Oprah appeared on the screen . Mrs . Feerrar and Mrs . Ingraham , Title I Reading Specialists , made a special announcement . “ Boys and girls , may I have your attention ? Although our special guest was not able to make it in person tonight , she wanted you to have a special gift .” At that moment , Mrs . Hubert , the reading specialist , and Mrs . Mumma and Ms . Wells , reading aides , began passing out wrapped gifts to every student and their family . At just the right moment , a recording of Oprah ’ s voice could be heard over the speaker , “ Open your gifts !”
Squeals of delight and cheers could be heard throughout the room ! Within minutes , The Lemonade Crime , by Jacqueline Davies , was revealed . A sequel to The Lemonade War , The Lemonade Crime was the book for the school ’ s One Book , One School Event .
As students went home that evening , with books tucked under their arms , they were anxious in anticipation of beginning to read the first chapter . Unknowingly , one more surprise awaited them ...
Wednesday , March 6th , Jersey Shore Elementary students experienced a virtual author visit with author , Jacqueline Davies . She spent an hour talking about the book and answering students ' questions .
Bravo to the reading team and Jersey Shore Elementary Students for joining together to provide an enriching and rewarding experience surrounding the joys of reading !
