Walking safely in Charbonneau By TOM KELLS
Living here in Charbonneau allows us to enjoy so many things , and one of those things is to walk around our beautiful community . But it comes with some risks because we either don ’ t have sidewalks , or some people decide not to use them .
Some people like to walk on French Prairie Road , which can be very dangerous . Some people like to walk in the fast lane in either direction . The law states that you are to walk on the right-hand side of the roadway if there is no sidewalk , which would be along the curb . When walking , you should also face traffic , but , if you are riding a bike , you should ride with the flow of traffic .
As you probably know , walking on French Prairie , which in the winter can be very dark and it is hard to see people in dark clothing , or in the summer with the bright sun creating dark shadows that prevents you from seeing someone or the sun shining in your eyes that can block your vision
for a short period of time , can also be very dangerous . When you walk on some of the other streets , some of which can be a little narrow , please try again to stay to the right side of the roadway so as to allow traffic to pass by safely .
So , as to keep everyone safe here in Charbonneau when driving in and around the community , please drive the speed limit , which is 25 miles per hour or slower . Many people tend to drive much faster , and , at faster speeds , it could make it difficult for a walker to get out of a driver ’ s way if they feel the driver doesn ’ t see them .
The most important thing when walking or riding a bike here in Charbonneau is to wear either light-colored clothing , bright-colored clothing , or vests or jackets with reflective strips on them .
If you are looking for a safety vest , or jacket , you may want to go to Workworld . com , Wilco ( farmstore . com ), or Amazon . com ( Amazon has a wide variety of reflective apparel available ).
Enjoy safe walking year-round here in Charbonneau !

Rule of the Month
A new Men ’ s Club Golf Rule was adopted March 7 .
The new local rule , approved by the Men ’ s Club Board , is now in effect for all Charbonneau Men ’ s Club Golf events . To be known as the “ Root Rule ,” it will allow a player , while finding his golf ball close to an exposed or perceived tree root interfering with their next shot , to lift and clean the ball . The player would then drop within one club length , and no closer to the hole from its original found position . This rule applies anywhere on the golf course . It will be the player ’ s responsibility to notify his playing partners of the situation before applying this rule .
I look forward to seeing you all on the course . Have a good season !
