During the month of January , Bellefonte Area High School junior English classes took part in the national Poetry Out Loud competition . Poetry Out Loud is a National Arts Education Program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition for high school students . At BAHS , juniors selected a poem that interested them , memorized it , and then recited it to the class . The teachers selected approximately 15 students from their classes that they felt did exceptionally well and conducted an after-school competition using the Poetry Out Loud scoring methods with those selected students . Kate Harman won that competition .
Kate is an exceptional student that participates in the school ’ s theater program . Along with theater , Kate is also involved with Golf , Yearbook , Class Cabinet , and Raider Revolution clubs . Kate earned the opportunity to compete at the Central PA CIU10 Regional Finals , held at the Clearfield Art Studio Theater on January 27th . She was required to memorize three poems during one week ’ s time and then recite them at the regional competition . Kate memorized the following poems : “ Truth is I Would Like to Escape Myself ” by Nour Al Ghraowi , “ I Hear a Fly Buzz – When I Died ” by Emily Dickinson , and “ Sweet Tooth ” by Russell Edson .
Kate had this to say about her experience with the Poetry Out Loud competition , “ Being involved in the Poetry Out Loud competition was a very cool experience . It was cool to be exposed to lots of kinds of poetry and have the chance to memorize and get familiar with a piece . It was also very fun to take part in the regional competition and meet the other students competing , as well as talk to some of the judges . Although it was stressful getting on stage and reciting all three of my memorized poems to both judges and an audience , it was very worthwhile , as public speaking skills are needed a lot in school , as well as in the future , being an adult .”
Kate competed against six other individuals - all within the Centre County and Clearfield areas . Kate earned second place at the competition ! Unfortunately , only the first place winner travels on to the State competition , but it was a feat and experience that the district and her teachers were very proud to see Kate accomplish !
